A.H. Fish’s “Le Carnaval” inspired Vanity Fair Covers

December 1914:

Harlequin with concentric diamond-print tights and Columbine in a yellow, cherry-themed dress with earrings.

Fish’s Harlequin is, with exception to certain colors, the costume Leon Bakst designed for Nijinsky to wear in “Le Carnaval” - a ballet that Michel Fokine and the Ballet Russes brought to stage four years earlier in 1910.

July 1915:

A very summer-themed illustration of Pierrot and a butterfly. The silhouette of Pierrot’s costume alludes to Leon Bakst’s costume design for Adolph Bolm’s Pierrot in “Le Carnaval”.

The antenna on the hat is very similar to the long curled feather sometimes seen in some of the more theatrical Pierrot costumes of the 1920s (Lenci wool dolls come to mind).

April 1922:

This scene - Pierrot peering at Harlequin and Columbine from around the curtain - is taken directly from Fokine’s ballet, with some notable differences.

Fish’s Columbine outfit is distinctly peacock in nature, while her Pierrot wears a burgundy domino mask/skullcap combination, just like Harlequin.
